COURSE: BIBLICAL COUNSELING BACHELOR LEVEL 3 Credit Hours Professor: Phillip du Plessis REQUIRED TEXT: 1. Competent to Counsel by Jay E. Adams 2. The Christian Counselor’s Manual by Jay E. Adams PURPOSE: There is no higher calling or more important work than that of sharing the word of God. Properly handling the scriptures is a skill acquired through diligent study and careful examination. This is not only true in relation to a pulpit ministry but it is equally fitting in the realm of counseling. In order to provide sound guidance and Godly advice, an individual must be thoroughly trained and equipped in the ministry of biblical counseling. There is no aspect of a minister’s life that is more time consuming or demanding than that of a counselor. There is also no aspect of ministry that brings the person of God closer with his people than the counselor-counselee relationship. Therefore, this course is designed to provide both minister and lay leader with an introductory understanding of scriptural techniques in the art of biblical counseling. OBJECTIVES: • Define the role of counselor • Determine the qualifications for counseling • Expose the student to sound counseling techniques • Expose the student to counseling terminology • Expose the student to various theories of counseling • Examine the difference between Christianity and psychiatry • Examine the importance and limitations of counseling ASSIGNMENT ONE: Complete The Christian Counselor’s Manual questions in the Oikonomia Bible Academy online program. ASSIGNMENT TWO: Read Competent to Counsel and write a five-page reflection paper on the author’s view of counseling. SCHEDULE: This course should be completed within fifteen weeks. PAPERS: Reflection papers are to be double spaced and submitted with a title page in an approved binder.
